Meet a Marist

   - Liz Wake

Liz Wake, Program Coordinator at the Exodus Community in West Heidelberg and a member of the Melbourne Marist Association, shares her rich journey with the Marist family. Her involvement began as a student in the first Romar group at Catholic College Sale in 1996. As she moved to university in Melbourne, she deepened her connection through vibrant young adult communities and mentoring relationships with Marist brothers and peers. This experience led her to volunteer in ministry and work with at-risk youth, eventually guiding her toward a vocation in teaching and later community outreach, inspired by the Marist values of hospitality, justice, and relational service.

Liz describes her Marist spirituality as a lived expression of the Gospel—being authentic, attentive, and compassionate to those most vulnerable. Her role at Exodus involves building relationships with struggling individuals and families, often affected by trauma and systemic failure. She embraces the joys and challenges of her ministry and motherhood with humility and a strong sense of community, drawing strength from her Marist formation and the mentors who supported her along the way.

Now a mother of two and married to Mick—whom she met through Marist youth circles—Liz continues to stay connected through Marist events, formation programs, and her involvement in national committees. She values the broader Marist network, including the sisters, brothers, and ministries beyond schools. Passionate about supporting marginalized communities, Liz feels blessed to carry forward the Marist mission of love, justice, and accompaniment in both her professional and personal life.

Journal and reflect on the following
  1. How has a community or faith group shaped your personal or professional path, as the Marist community did for Liz?
  2. In what ways can you embody Gospel values—such as compassion, attentiveness, and authenticity—in your daily relationships and work?
  3. Who have been the mentors in your life, and how have they influenced your growth and sense of mission?
  4. What does it mean to live in a “Marian way” today—especially in how we respond to those who are vulnerable or marginalized?
  5. How do you balance the demands of ministry or service with family life, rest, and personal joy?
  6. What role does hospitality and relational ministry play in building a stronger, more inclusive community?
  7. Are there opportunities in your own context to reconnect with or support a mission you once felt deeply drawn to, as Liz did with the Marist Association?

Final Prayer

Loving God,
We thank You for the witness of those who walk the Marist way—quietly, compassionately, and courageously—bringing Your love to the margins. Inspired by Mary, may we live with attentiveness, humility, and deep care for those around us, especially the most vulnerable. Strengthen us to be mentors and companions, to serve with joy, and to build community rooted in Gospel values. In the spirit of Marcellin and all who have gone before us, may we respond generously to Your call, trusting that in small acts of love, Your kingdom is revealed. Amen.
