Come, Holy Spirit - The God Who Shows Up - When We Are Scared

In this Pentecost reflection, Andrew shares how the Holy Spirit - often the forgotten person of the Trinity - has shown up powerfully at the most vulnerable moments of his life. Drawing on Jesus' image of the Spirit as wind in John's Gospel, he recalls two defining experiences: trembling behind a lectern before 400 people and whispering 'Come, Holy Spirit,' only to feel an overwhelming warmth and presence that launched his first youth group; and standing in a delivery room, unexpectedly holding his newborn daughter Michelle, struck by the fragile beauty of new life. Through these stories, and reflecting on Mary's yes to the angel and the disciples huddled in the upper room, Andrew invites us to see that it is precisely in our fear and vulnerability that God draws near. This Pentecost, he calls us to open our hearts, say yes to the Spirit's invitation, and pray that the fire of God's love might be rekindled in us before our final breath.

What is your dream for Marist Laity?

At a recent meeting, I was asked the question, “What is your dream for Marist laity?” Initially, I hesitated because I was not entirely sure what the question meant. Often in the Gospels, when Jesus is asked a question, he responds with another question. So I replied, “What is the dream of Marist Laity in 2023?” and also, “What is the dream of Marist Laity in 2030?” In our discussion, we reflected on a recent Marist Laity Australia committee meeting at Hunters Hill. There was a wide range of responses, as there is a rich diversity among lay people — one size does not fit all. We spoke about the struggles lay people face in ministry, such as feeding the homeless at St Patrick’s Church Hill and young people participating in immersions to the Philippines. Yet when the question becomes, “Would you like to be a Lay Marist?” many hesitate. In Australia, there can be a reluctance to make long-term commitments. I found myself asking, “How do we create a pathway that inspires, calls, and forms lay people to take the step of becoming Lay Marists?”

The name Marist is a family name belonging to a great variety of groups: the four religious congregations: Marist Brothers of the Schools, Marist Sisters, Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary, Society of Mary and many lay groups.The Society of Mary is only part of something much greater. The first Marists called it 'the work of Mary'. This expression has a rich meaning: that Mary wants all people to experience the mercy of God. She calls others to share her concern: 'I will give you my name and you will do my work'. The work of those who live her spirit is to bring the gospel of love and mercy to the world. So when, as individuals or groups, we call ourselves 'Marist' we express a desire to live in a certain way and participate in this work of Mary.

Today is the feast day of Mary the Immaculate Conception. This celebration is not just about Mary but all of creation. The teaching of the Immaculate conception says that Mary was born without original sin. This does not mean that Mary in her life time could not sin, but rather, chose not to. Rather, creation has the divine spark of grace in the beginning and this is seen in Mary.

Blog - Being more Active - Confirmation and Synodality

On Sunday, my youngest son will receive the sacrament of confirmation in our local Catholic Church. He has chosen the Franciscan name Maximillian Kolbe after being inspired by the story of him over the dinner table. On Thursday, his grandparents took him to the confirmation practice as both my wife and myself were not able to attend. We were later to hear that the regular Diocesan Bishop of Broken Bay was not able to attend, but rather, our former Bishop, David Walker would be there. Following, in preparation, my wife and I visited our local Koorong books. As we walked out of the Koorong Books, Bishop David Walker was walking in. How random? I thought to myself or rather, is this serendipity? How funny we were only talking about him, by chance he would be our bishop on Sunday, then he suddenly appears. I think there is no chance in this, but rather, that, we are all somehow connected.

Is Church like Macdonald’s?

Often, I ask my kids the questions “do you want to go to church?” 98% of the time they respond “no”. As a father I want them to desire with their heart a willingness to go to church. Not because they have to or not because they are forced too. Sometimes I feel quite lost in this situation. I often go to church alone. In the Catholic church, going to church can be like going to Macdonald’s. We go in quickly. We go out quickly. We don’t talk to many people. There is a man dressed up in suite red and yellow who smiles and waves. In the Catholic church the colours are a little bit different, maybe, white, green, red. He smiles. Are we meant to smile back? In the time in MacDonald’s, conversations do not have time to go very deep. This is a culture of consumerism. What do I want? What would you like from the MacDonald’s menu? Clearly the old Catholic church seems not to cut it. At least not like French fries.

The early Christians were not called Christians they were known as “the people of the way”. When we call ourselves “Marist” do we lose a sense of who we are? A noun or a name can be static. Something anchored to our memories. Rather could we say “we are people in the way of Mary”. So that the word “Marist” is seen more as a verb than was a noun. “In the way of Mary” is so much more active. It looks to the inspiration of the past through others who have come before us, to be active in the living moment as instruments who as John Claude Colin said “think as Mary”, “feel as Mary” and “act as Mary” did.

One of my favourite Gospel scenes has always been Jesus’ return to Nazareth and his reading in the Synagogue. You remember the context in Luke’s account - Jesus was at prayer after being baptised and the Holy Spirit descended on him and a voice came from Heaven: “This is my beloved Son”. Then he was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days - days of prayer, reflection, fasting and temptation. Then “with the power of the Spirit in him” he returned to Galilee, teaching in the synagogues. Then he came to Nazareth “where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. He stood up to read, and they handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll he found the place where it is written:

As part of the Brothers Today Secretariat’s project to commemorate the Bicentenary, visual storyteller Conor Ashleigh, a former Marist student from Australia, has been photographing and interviewing Marist Brothers around the world. This is the first in a series of short film he has made. The theme of this short film echoes the original dream of Marcellin 200 years ago: Serving God through the service with children and young people.

Blog - Religion is not cool

Our world today shy’s away from religion and spirituality. Stating “Religion is a personal thing”, “don’t mix religion and politics” and “my beliefs are my own business”. Religion has become a not so cool commodity and is largely rejected by secular culture. But for a Christian, from a Christian perspective as a person who believes in the infinite love some call “God”, where does that leave us? Should we abandon sharing our deep inspiration? Quiet the opposite. But initially, we should use not secular values to combat this. We will lose this argument. Secular culture which values things like logic, science, material, and objectivity. Saint Francis of Assisi would say “preach the Gospel and where necessary use words”. We are called to go deeper than what seems obvious. Through what seems to be hidden. We need to look more deeply. We are called to embody a deeper inspiration where Christ is living inside of me.

This week two young men knocked on my door to tell me that Jesus loved me. I invited them in for a cup of tea and we spoke about the love of God in our lives. I really admire the boldness and courage of these two young group from this group who are doing a weeks mission. Who are going to face so much rejection. Of am sure that most people did not give them a cup of tea but rather closed the door in their face, and yet, they kept on persisting on reaching out on the street or knocking on doors. Just to tell people how much God loved them....

In 2005, Bishop Brian Heenan (Rockhampton Diocese) sent a letter to various religious congregations asking if there was anyone available and willing for ministry in the western parts of the diocese. Mary Kiely, the St. John of God Sister who had been covering the territory in a 4WD for the previous five years had been voted into leadership. For twelve years before that, Annemarie Jensen PBVM, a qualified pilot, had flown a small plane to minister to the people of the 'outback'. (A real flying Nun).This aerial ministry began in 1981, the plane being piloted by several diocesan priests.

Sister Fidelis 60 years as a Marist Sister

On Friday October 21 former staff and students of Marist Sisters College gathered to celebrate Sister Fidelis 60 years as a Marist sister. Many of the years were serving the Woolwich community as leader and principal. Today Sister Fidelis serves the St Patrick's community as Parish secretary. Most Saturday and Sunday mornings she wakes up at 4 am to prepare to coordinate St Patricks efforts to feed the homeless of Sydney. Sister Fidelis is passionate and faith filled leader who would encourage you to come along to the new program she is running called 'The Chosen' event on Sundays at 2 pm at St Patricks Church Hill (See http://www.maristlaityaustralia.com/2030/Events/808.php). It was great to catch up with so many friends and Marists as we remembered the goodness that Sister Fidelis and Mary has brought us.

5 Fundamentals of Leadership - Leadership Development

You have to have the capacity for existential flexibility. What does that mean? Apple had already come up with success with Apple One and Apple Two. It is already a huge company and is very successful and they are working on their next big project. And then in 1981 Steve Jobs and his senior executives went on a tour of Xerox PARC. Their XEROX showed them an innovation they had come up with called the Graphic User Interface. This would allow us to use a mouse to control the cursor on the screen to click on folders move them around to use the computer. Prior to that you had to use a (text based) computer language like DOS. Remember Steve Jobs' vision and just cause to empower the individual to stand up to the status quo. When he saw this amazing Graphical User Interface he immediately saw that this was a way more powerful way to get more people to use a computer because it was so much more simpler and easier to use. As they are leaving Xerox, he says to his executives, we have to invest in this. And his people say 'we can't'. One of the voices of reason says 'Steve we cannot'. We have already invested countless man hours and millions of dollars in an entirely different strategic direction. If we invest in the Graphical User Interface we will blow up our own company. To which Steve Jobs responds 'better we blow up our own company than someone else'.

Overcoming bad inner voices. We don't often think about it and may never discuss it with others at all, but pretty much everyone has voices in their heads. A murmuring stream of thoughts that run along our minds most of the time. Sometimes the inner voices are encouraging calling you to run those final few yards. 'You are nearly there. Keep going. Keep going'. Or urging you to come down because you know it will be okay in the end. But sometimes, the inner voice is not very nice at all. Like Jesus in his ministry among the sick and the lost, we are called to meet God in the most unlikely people and places. Like him who often immersed himself at the margins, we too must be in that frontier space. It is that precarious liminal space where the true cost of our discipleship is counted, because we dare to walk with the Samaritans of our time, just like Jesus did before us.

Blog - Does being a Christian matter?

No. Being a Christian does not matter. At least for the 80 to 90% of Australians who in the past 40 years who have walked away from various Christian Churches. There are an assorted reasons why “the church no longer matters”, but at its core, is the loss of faith in Jesus Christ. Our culture today places importance on continually being happy, on constant entertainment and on earning money. Did Jesus say “Blessed are the happy” .No. Rather, he taught blessed are the poor”, “Blessed are those who mourn” and “Blessed are the persecuted”. Constant happiness, entertainment or earning money fit into the culture of the ego and places the individual in the driver’s seat. Being a Christian does not cut it.

Blog - Forget about God

There is a forgetting that is occurring in Christian communities. A loss of the importance of being a follower of Jesus Christ. At a recent year 12 retreat I helped to facilitate, some students wrote in their evaluations “I am not religious” or “I am not Christian”. Some parents I know who were brought up Catholic have decided not to baptise their Children. Even in my own immediate family my own children say “why do we have to go to church”. It would seem I am fighting a loosing battle.

I came across an old story on the internet a few days ago, from the American author Grace Paley, recounting how her elderly bedridden father shared with her a word of how to persevere when growing old, and his main advice was this: “when you get up in the morning you must take your heart in your two hands. You must do this every morning.... Talk softly (to it)... You can whisper also, Remember, remember.”

There are lots of ways that I maintain my relationship with God. It has grown out of years of questioning and engaging. I am not going to pretend it is something that I received over night. The call of being a follower of God is being a searcher. Someone who searches and it is a lifelong process. Prayer being a conversation with God. Sometimes that is worth words. Sometimes that is in a silence space. Sometimes that is allowing whatever is happening to come forth, and to evolve. There is an openness to that God will unfold things. I am in a loving relationship with God, and I do not need to work for God’s love. It is there.

Francis of Assisi was born in 1181 or 1182 AD to one of the richest families in the town of Assisi Italy. As a young adult he was a bit of a party animal hosting parties for friends and wanting to be the centre of attention. But around the age of 20 he wanted to be a noble Knight, so he rode off to war against a neighbouring town of Perugia. But, was soon captured and jailed for 1 year. This dark moment had a profound effect on his life. A ransom was paid by his father and Francis was returned to Assisi.
