   - The Story of John Claude Colin

   - Part 1

A cartoon of the story of John Claude Colin. Part 1. The first part in John Claude Colin's life one of the founders of the Marist Society.

John Claude Colin is born in France in 1790 at the same time the French Revolution is breaking out. From this Chaos and the later wars brought on by Napoleon, Mary will invite the first men and women to found the Society of Mary. The original vision was for a multiple branched society even though at the time in the 1800s the church could not conceive of lay people, brothers, fathers and sisters being in one group. The original vision given by Mary had a multiple branch society in mind. Soon the early Marists would pledge themselves and be invited to go on mission. Both in the remote regions of the mountains of France and also to the outer islands of the Pacific. Soon they will go out beyond their comfort zones for Mary.

Journal and reflect on the following
  1. Faith Amid Revolution: How did the turmoil of the French Revolution influence Jean-Claude Colin’s early life and faith? What challenges did his family face, and how might these have shaped his later desire to serve the Church?
  2. Mary’s Inspiration: When Jean-Claude heard that “Our Lady wants a Society that will live her life,” what do you think this meant? How did Mary’s example guide Colin’s vision for the Society of Mary?
  3. The Spirit of Hiddenness: Colin said that the Marists should be “hidden and unknown in the world.” What does this suggest about humility and service? How might this spirit be lived out today in your community or school?
  4. Collaboration and Mission: Jean-Claude Colin worked alongside Marcellin Champagnat and Jeanne-Marie Chavoin. How did each contribute to the broader Marist mission, and why was their partnership so important?
  5. Obstacles and Perseverance: What obstacles did Colin face in gaining Church approval for the Society of Mary? What does his perseverance teach about faith and patience when following God’s call?
  6. Global Mission: Why was the approval of the Society of Mary in 1836 a turning point for missionary work, especially to the South Pacific? How did the first Marist missionaries live out their motto “for the greater glory of God and the honor of Mary”?
  7. Legacy and Challenge: Which qualities of leadership and faith stand out in Jean-Claude Colin’s story? How can his example inspire young people today to live with courage, humility, and hope?

Final prayer

Loving God,
we thank You for the life and faith of Jean-Claude Colin, who heard Your call to serve through Mary’s quiet and humble way. In the chaos of revolution and change, You planted in his heart a dream of peace — a family of faith who would live “hidden and unknown in the world,” bringing Your compassion to all people. Lord, grant us that same courage to listen deeply, to act gently, and to trust boldly in Your providence. Like Mary, may we say “yes” to Your will each day, and like Colin, may we build communities of love and hope wherever we are sent. Renew in us the Marist spirit of simplicity, mercy, and service, so that our lives may reflect Your light in a world in need of peace.
Amen.
