National Assembly Forum

   - March 2025

The opening of the online gathering brought together Marist Association members from across Australia in preparation for the upcoming National Assembly in Brisbane on June 26–27. The meeting began with warm welcomes, acknowledgments of recent events like the Faith Formation Colloquium, and a prayerful reflection grounded in the Gospel of Mark, focusing on Bartimaeus and the theme of “pilgrims of hope.” Participants were invited to reflect on healing, trust, and the presence of God, reinforcing the spiritual foundation of the gathering.

The assembly’s purpose was explained as a space for communal discernment, not merely as a conference with keynote speakers. David Hall introduced the methodology of spiritual conversation, inspired by the synodal and plenary council processes of the Catholic Church. This structured approach ensures every participant is given voice through small-group reflection, silence, scripture, and facilitated conversation. The focus will be on two overarching questions: Who do we want to be as Marists? and What do we want to do? These will be explored through three guided conversations around celebration, challenges, and courageous future directions.

Practical details about the assembly were shared, including accommodation, registration logistics, and the weekend structure. The event will include opening liturgies, small group conversations, an assembly dinner, and a concluding Mass with Archbishop Mark Coleridge. While online attendance will not be offered this time due to the nature of the methodology, post-assembly materials and opportunities for feedback will be made available. The pastoral plan that emerges will serve as a guiding document for local Marist ministries and communities.

Additional resources were highlighted, including those on the MaristFormation.org website and upcoming events such as the Marian Lecture by Stan Grant and the mid-year retreat at Mittagong. Attendees were encouraged to participate in the current Sondage (consultation) process for nominating new Association leadership. The gathering closed with gratitude, a call to be present and engaged in Brisbane, and an affirmation of the significance of coming together in hope, faith, and mutual encouragement as a Marist family.

Journal and reflect on the following
  1. How am I personally contributing to the shared identity and mission of the Marist Association?
  2. What does it mean for me to listen to the Spirit in moments of communal discernment and decision-making?
  3. In what ways have I experienced transformation through spiritual conversations or deep listening with others?
  4. What challenges and opportunities do I see facing our Marist community, and how might we respond with courage and faith?
  5. How can I be more present, intentional, and open during the upcoming Assembly and the preparation process?
  6. What does it mean to be a “pilgrim of hope” in my ministry, workplace, or family life?
  7. How do I ensure that every voice—especially the quiet or unheard—is valued in our shared journey of discernment?

Final Prayer

Loving and faithful God, we thank You for gathering us as one Marist family, inspired by the vision of Saint Marcellin Champagnat, John Claude Colin, Jean Marie Chavoin and Francois Perrotton and united with one Marist Family. As we prepare for our Assembly and walk together on this shared journey, open our hearts to listen deeply—to Your Spirit, to one another, and to the needs of our world. Like Mary, may we be courageous, responsive, and faithful. May our conversations be rooted in love, our decisions shaped by discernment, and our actions reflect the hope we carry for the Church, for young people, and for one another. Strengthen us to be humble servants, joy-filled witnesses, and builders of communion in all we do. Amen.
