Pope Leo - Warns - AI needs to be disarmed
Pope Leo, in his address on artificial intelligence, called on the Church and the whole human family to engage courageously with the profound challenges posed by AI, drawing a parallel with Leo XIII's response to the Industrial Revolution through Rerum Novarum. Speaking from his own listening to scientists, policymakers, teachers, and the voiceless, he declared that AI must be 'disarmed' — freed from logics of domination, exclusion, and death — and redirected toward the common good, much like the Church's longstanding commitment to nuclear disarmament. But disarming alone is not enough; drawing on his missionary experience in Peru and the biblical image of Nehemiah rebuilding Jerusalem, he urged all people to become 'artisans of hope,' building brick by brick a more just and fraternal society grounded in the conviction that every person is unique, irreplaceable, and irreducible to data or productivity. Entrusting all present to Mary and invoking God's blessing, he closed with a vision of the civilisation of love — not a naive dream, but a direction opened by Jesus Christ within history.
