Prayer - July 26 - Matthew 13:44-52

This is a complete prayer and reflection liturgy centred on the Gospel of Matthew 13:44-52, in which Jesus uses three parables — the treasure hidden in a field, the pearl of great price, and the net of good and bad fish — to reveal the meaning of the Kingdom of Heaven. The liturgy opens with an Acknowledgement of Country, a breathing meditation to enter God's presence, the Sign of the Cross, and an opening prayer to the Holy Spirit, before the Gospel is proclaimed by assigned readers (Narrator, Jesus, and Disciples). A four-part reflection then unpacks each parable, drawing out the theme that the Kingdom's meaning is often hidden and that even the difficult or 'bad' parts of our lives can become stepping stones toward God. A Prayer for Hope on Dark Days

This is a prayer for hope in times of anxiety, doubt, and depression. The one praying begins by naming the days when worry crowds the mind, the heart races, and dark clouds gather, and asks God to hold them gently, to help them recognise their own capacity for transformation - imaged as a butterfly - and to take refuge in God's presence. The prayer then petitions God to fill the soul with hope and Spirit, so that Christ, the 'morning Son,' might warm a frozen heart and change the mind. It closes by asking for tears to be wiped away, anxiety and depression to be lifted, and shadows to be dispelled, so that the one praying might see the doorway God has opened for them and begin to sing of God's love as a beloved child of God.

Prayer Calling Forth Our Angels

This prayer calls upon the Holy Spirit to send forth guardian angels for guidance, protection, and strength, drawing from key biblical encounters with angels. August 15 is a significant day for the Marists as it marks the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a central figure in Marist spirituality. The global Marist Family, including Fathers, Brothers, Sisters, Missionary Sisters, and Laity, honors this day with special Masses, gatherings, and spiritual retreats, reflecting their deep devotion to Mary and their collective mission. Over the years, this date has been marked by important milestones such as the approval of the Society of Mary by Pope Gregory XVI in 1836, Marcellin Champagnat's reflections on Marian devotion, and François Perroton's vow to missionary work. Even in challenging times, like the virtual gathering of Marist Laity in Australia in 2020, the Feast of the Assumption remains a unifying celebration of Marian devotion and the Marist mission.

Marist Daily Reflection - August 14

We reflect on our vocation today, we are reminded of the significant milestones in Marist history that inspire us to discern God's call. On August 14, 1830, Lay Marists in Belley, France, established a lay confraternity, embracing Jean-Claude Colin's vision of extending the Marist mission beyond the clergy. On the same date in 1833, Marcellin Champagnat sent the first Marist Brothers to La Valla-en-Gier, marking the start of their educational mission. In 1842, Lay Marists in Lyon organized a pilgrimage to Fourvière, demonstrating their commitment to the Marist charism. François Perroton embarked on her missionary journey to Oceania in 1845, leading to the founding of the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary. Jeanne-Marie Chavoin, in 1851, reflected on the perseverance needed in establishing the Marist Sisters. Lastly, in 1873, John-Claude Colin urged the Marists to maintain unity and focus as he neared the end of his leadership. Let us pray, drawing strength from these examples to live our own vocations with dedication and faith.

40 day - Prayer and Fast - For Peace

Marist Laity Australia has organized a 40-day Novena and Fast dedicated to praying for peace in regions including Gaza, Ukraine, Russia, Israel, Myanmar/Burma, Yemen, Ethiopia, Syria, and Afghanistan. Participants are encouraged to engage in daily meditation, focusing initially on their breathing followed by scripture reading and prayer. If possible, attending daily mass and praying for peace as a family or community are also key components of the Novena. Participants are asked to fast by skipping one meal a day, substituting it with bread and water, and keeping other meals light. Additionally, engaging in the sacrament of reconciliation, to foster a deeper spiritual commitment throughout this period.

Blog - Religion is not cool

Our world today shy’s away from religion and spirituality. Stating “Religion is a personal thing”, “don’t mix religion and politics” and “my beliefs are my own business”. Religion has become a not so cool commodity and is largely rejected by secular culture. But for a Christian, from a Christian perspective as a person who believes in the infinite love some call “God”, where does that leave us? Should we abandon sharing our deep inspiration? Quiet the opposite. But initially, we should use not secular values to combat this. We will lose this argument. Secular culture which values things like logic, science, material, and objectivity. Saint Francis of Assisi would say “preach the Gospel and where necessary use words”. We are called to go deeper than what seems obvious. Through what seems to be hidden. We need to look more deeply. We are called to embody a deeper inspiration where Christ is living inside of me.

Knowing in their beings the great wonder which each reflected. But despite these joys the great difficulties each had to live through. Elizabeth as an old woman with the shame of not having a child. Mary as a teenager having a child outside of marriage. There is a level of social stigma. Yet. God makes the impossible possible. It is through this messiness that God appears, and joy emerges.

Pray with the healing power of Christ. In twelfth century German Saint Hildegard of Bingen had a vision of a “man in sapphire blue” whom she named as Christ who is present in all things. Christ is “the son of justice having the lightning of burning love and existing with such glory that every creature becomes illuminated by the brightness of his light.” He bends “compassionately in the direction of the poverty of the human race.” We become that Blue Man; we become the compassionate Christ; we become the radiance of God.

St Benedict told his monks, 'Always keep death before your eyes.' We don't talk much about death in the modern world. But what the whole Christian tradition tells us is that if we would become wise we must learn the lesson that we have here 'no abiding city.' [We must hear] what the wise of ages past and present say to us: to have life in focus we must have death in [focus. . .]. Talking about death is hard for the worldly to understand. Indeed the principal fantasy of much worldliness operates out of completely the opposite point of view: not the wisdom of our own mortality but the pure fantasy that we are immortal, beyond physical weakness.

A Prayer for Christmas

The Angels were sign posts who gave directions for the Shepherds to find the baby God. God appeared as a fragile baby, not like the Greek or Roman God’s Thor or Odin who came with power and bolts of lightning. God appears in the unexpected simple child. For most people the child would have looked and acted like any other baby. Yet, the Angels were given a direction which revealed to them the deeper understanding of who the child was.

There are many difficulties when people pray. Like when the children have gone to school or like just before we arrive at work. We try and find a point to pray. On the first day, we can pray easily. On the second day, we repeat the first day. The third day our abilities to pray tapers off. On the fourth day we find it very hard. We feel alone.

Mary was a 13 or 14-year-old girl when the angel invited her to bear God’s son. From an outsider's perspective in the Jewish culture 2024 years ago, it would seem that Mary has committed a great sin. However, God works his most wonderful miracle through what would seem as a sin, in a poor and unmarried girl.
