The Two Popes

The Two Popes is a thought-provoking drama that imagines the private conversations between Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (the future Pope Francis) and Pope Benedict XVI in the lead-up to Benedict’s unprecedented resignation from the papacy in 2013. The film opens with Bergoglio seeking permission to retire from his role as Archbishop of Buenos Aires. He travels to Rome with the intention of submitting his resignation letter, only to find himself drawn into a series of intimate and challenging discussions with Benedict, who is secretly contemplating his own resignation due to personal doubts and the burden of recent Church scandals.

As the two men spend time together at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, they engage in profound theological debates and personal reflections. Their conversations explore the tension between tradition and reform within the Catholic Church. Benedict, portrayed as an introverted traditionalist, upholds doctrine and continuity, while Bergoglio represents a more pastoral, reform-minded approach, emphasizing mercy, inclusion, and change. Despite their ideological differences, the film shows their growing mutual respect and understanding.

Flashbacks provide insight into Bergoglio’s past in Argentina during the Dirty War, where he wrestled with feelings of guilt over perceived failures to protect members of his Jesuit community. These scenes serve to humanize him and show his spiritual evolution from a more authoritarian leader to one of deep humility and compassion. Meanwhile, Benedict’s internal struggle centers around his inability to handle the growing crises in the Church, including the sexual abuse scandals, and his recognition that a new kind of leadership is needed.

Ultimately, The Two Popes presents a fictionalized but emotionally powerful portrait of transformation, forgiveness, and the complexity of spiritual leadership. The film concludes with Benedict confiding in Bergoglio that he intends to resign and encourages him to be open to God’s calling. Their shared moments—watching football, playing piano, and sharing meals—reveal the warmth of their relationship despite contrasting worldviews. With powerful performances by Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, the film invites viewers to reflect on humility, grace, and the evolving mission of the Church in the modern world.

Journal and reflect on the following
  1. What does the film suggest about the importance of dialogue between people with different beliefs or perspectives—especially within the Church?
  2. How do the personal struggles of both Benedict and Bergoglio shape their leadership and understanding of faith?
  3. In what ways does The Two Popes explore the balance between tradition and change in the Catholic Church?
  4. What role does forgiveness—both of others and of oneself—play in the spiritual journeys of the two popes?
  5. How does the film portray the humanity of religious leaders, and why is this portrayal significant?
  6. What does the film teach us about the value of humility and the willingness to admit limitations or mistakes?
  7. How might the Church (and society) benefit from leaders who are willing to listen, grow, and evolve in their understanding of the world?

Final Prayer

Loving God,

We give You thanks for the lives and witness of Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI.

In Pope Francis, we have seen the heart of a shepherd—gentle, merciful, and close to the poor.Through his life, You have shown us how to walk humbly, speak boldly, and love tenderly.

In Pope Benedict, we have witnessed a deep love for truth, for beauty, and for the mystery of faith.Through his intellect and quiet strength, You revealed the richness of the Church’s traditionand the stillness where Your voice can be heard. We thank You for their courage to lead, to listen, and to surrender to Your Spirit.

May their legacy inspire us to build bridges, seek peace, and live with humility and hope.

As they return home to You, may they rest in Your eternal embrace, and may we carry forward the light they kindled in our hearts.

Through Christ our Lord,

Amen.
